  39. sampling and data collection processes in
  40. qualitative interview studies, and to discuss
  41. the contribution of these processes to
  42. determining the strength of the evidence
  43. generated and thereby to decisions for
  44. public health practice and policy.
  45. Approach: This discussion is informed by
  46. a hierarchy-of-evidence-for-practice model.
  47. The paper provides succinct guidelines
  48. for key sampling and data collection
  49. considerations in qualitative research
  50. involving interview studies. The importance
  51. of allowing time for immersion in a given
  52. community to become familiar with the
  53. context and population is discussed,
  54. as well as the practical constraints that
  55. sometimes operate against this stage.
  56. The role of theory in guiding sample
  57. selection is discussed both in terms of
  58. identifying likely sources of rich data and
  59. in understanding the issues emerging
  60. from the data. It is noted that sampling
  61. further assists in confirming the developing
  62. evidence and also illuminates data that
  63. does not seem to fit. The importance of
  64. reporting sampling and data collection
  65. processes is highlighted clearly to enable
  66. others to assess both the strength of the
  67. evidence and the broader applications of
  68. the findings.
  69. Conclusion: Sampling and data collection
  70. processes are critical to determining the
  71. quality of a study and the generalisability
  72. of the findings. We argue that these
  73. processes should operate within the
  74. parameters of the research goal, be guided
  75. by emerging theoretical considerations,
  76. cover a range of relevant participant
  77. perspectives, and be clearly outlined in
  78. research reports with an explanation of any
  79. research limitations.

  294. sampling and data collection processes in&#13;
  295. qualitative interview studies, and to discuss&#13;
  296. the contribution of these processes to&#13;
  297. determining the strength of the evidence&#13;
  298. generated and thereby to decisions for&#13;
  299. public health practice and policy.&#13;
  300. Approach: This discussion is informed by&#13;
  301. a hierarchy-of-evidence-for-practice model.&#13;
  302. The paper provides succinct guidelines&#13;
  303. for key sampling and data collection&#13;
  304. considerations in qualitative research&#13;
  305. involving interview studies. The importance&#13;
  306. of allowing time for immersion in a given&#13;
  307. community to become familiar with the&#13;
  308. context and population is discussed,&#13;
  309. as well as the practical constraints that&#13;
  310. sometimes operate against this stage.&#13;
  311. The role of theory in guiding sample&#13;
  312. selection is discussed both in terms of&#13;
  313. identifying likely sources of rich data and&#13;
  314. in understanding the issues emerging&#13;
  315. from the data. It is noted that sampling&#13;
  316. further assists in confirming the developing&#13;
  317. evidence and also illuminates data that&#13;
  318. does not seem to fit. The importance of&#13;
  319. reporting sampling and data collection&#13;
  320. processes is highlighted clearly to enable&#13;
  321. others to assess both the strength of the&#13;
  322. evidence and the broader applications of&#13;
  323. the findings.&#13;
  324. Conclusion: Sampling and data collection&#13;
  325. processes are critical to determining the&#13;
  326. quality of a study and the generalisability&#13;
  327. of the findings. We argue that these&#13;
  328. processes should operate within the&#13;
  329. parameters of the research goal, be guided&#13;
  330. by emerging theoretical considerations,&#13;
  331. cover a range of relevant participant&#13;
  332. perspectives, and be clearly outlined in&#13;
  333. research reports with an explanation of any&#13;
  334. research limitations.&#13;
